Dylan Fischer
Forest Scientist “I spent part of a sabbatical in Chile in 2019, and began studying the forests of Calbuco Volcano. As a forest ecosystem ecologist, my research has allowed me to study high to low elevation systems, young to old ecosystems, from grasslands to forests, and from deserts to rainforests.” Dr. Fischer has been a faculty member at Evergreen State College since 2006. He completed his Ph.D. in forestry science in 2005 from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ and a master’s degree in forestry science in 2001. His research addresses links between plant diversity and ecosystem function, and ecosystem responses to perturbations. He focuses on plant disturbance ecology, riparian forest ecology, soil carbon, nutrient cycling, root dynamics, tree physiology, and forest carbon cycling. Recent projects include links between tree molecular genetics and ecosystem ecology, comparing water budgets for different tree species, tracking forest carbon fluxes in temperate forests over long periods of time, and measure responses to catastrophic volcanic eruptions and tephra deposition.
